Resorts & Ruins is a set of 3 sound works by Yannis Kyriakides.
There are several common themes in these pieces, spaces and voices, in both a physical and narrative sense. All the pieces use both source material that highlight culturally specific vocal traditions, namely Turkish pop music, Cypriot epic song, and Baroque opera, but they also all make extensive use of other forms of speech and vocal acts.
In ‘Varosha (Disco Debris)’, a narrating voice is our tour-guide in the ruins of the Cypriot ghost town Varosha; the many fragments of voices, sung and spoken, were recorded by literally walking through them.
This piece was created for the exhibition ‘Suspended Spaces’ for Maison de la Culture, Amiens, and presented later in the Centre Pompidou, Paris, as part of an interactive installation where the audience [was invited to] walk through an invisible architecture of granulated sound.
‘The One-Hundred Words’ is made up entirely of voice or of the trace of voice synthesized with electronic sounds. It was commissioned and created at the GRM studios in Paris, and performed at the Presence Electronique festival in 2012.
‘Covertures’ consists of walls of sound made up of frozen moments from Monteverdi’s Poppea, convoluted with the voices of crowds. The installation Covertures was created for the Dutch Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2011.
