about

Farewell Concert by Yannis Kyriakides
Based on: Maria Callas farewell performance at the Royal Festival Hall, London, November 26, 1973.
‘From October 1973 to April 1974, the soprano Maria Callas travelled the world on a so-called ‘farewell’ concert tour to- gether with tenor Giuseppe Di Stefano and a piano accom- panist. They performed a collection of her favourite operatic arias, including arias from Bizet’s ‘Carmen’, Verdi’s ‘I Vespri Si- ciliani’ and ending with one of the arias she made her own, ‘O Mio Babbino Caro’ from Puccini’s ‘Gianni Schicchi’.
I found it fascinating when reading about this tour, that many people criticised Callas for not being able to sing like she used to. The critique was often directed at the fact that her dia- phragm could not sustain long phrases anymore, as if singers are like athletes, and once their bodies decline, they should be discarded. On the contrary, in music, I think this where it starts to get interesting. I find the fragility and unstable quality of her voice in these recordings quite captivating.
The tour itself gave audiences the chance to witness a Callas performance for the last time, and in this way, it had a palpable emotional power because people knew that they would never see or hear her live again. The role of the audience and the mixed emotions that are audible in their response is therefore such a vital aspect of the recording that I took the samples from.
What I tried to do in this piece was to dissolve and synthesize Callas’ voice with the sound of her adoring audience into one ecstatic space, to bridge the resonance of the voice and the noise of the clap.’
