IN MEMORY OF PUNK ROCK by Massimo Pupillo
Based on: Clapping sounds on ‘It’s alive’ by the Ramones, Rainbow Theater London, 1977 (first applause, 15 seconds into the album).
‘At the time of working on this piece, I haven’t been perform- ing or attending a show for more than a year. No one knows at this point when it will happen again, and under what circum- stances. Recently I have come across a recording of the Clash playing near Rome in 1980. It had been recorded on a ghetto blaster by an historical figure of Rome’s alternative radio. As I heard the Clash start their set and the crowd goes crazy, I was overtaken by emotion and started to weep.
There is something profound in the layman ritual of a punk rock show, one of the few true moment of communion left to us poor modern souls.’
